Not Hockey Related: Slumdog Millionaire
It was a good day today. Caps’ won (in overtime against the Islanders) and I saw one of the best movies I have seen ever. If you haven’t yet seen it, skip dinner, call in sick to work, whatever–but see Slumdog Millionaire. It has everything. Suspense, tragedy, humor, inspiration, etc. I knew it was good (having won the Golden Globe award for best drama), but I had no idea how good.
The concept of flashbacks to explain why this kid from abject poverty (an orphan from the slums of Mumbai) knows the answers when he appears on the Indian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire is brilliant. The storyline is split into three parts (seamlessly woven together) and the main characters are thus played by three sets of actors–from young children to adults–and all of the actors are wonderful.
This is a movie made for the paltry sum of $15 million. There are no known actors (unless perhaps you are more familiar with “Bollywood” than I am). But this movie will make you laugh and cry, will break your heart with pain and joy, and will make you reorder your top 10 movie list of all time.
